Book: Journey of Souls: Case Studies Of Life Between Lives

journeyofsoulsWhether religious or not, this is a fascinating look into an unexplored possibility of what happens after death. I enjoyed the example of the creator/source being an active and living presence in our lives – here and in the hereafter- as opposed to the current working definition that tends to separate the creator as the big judge outside that has created a hierarchy of painful separation through rules, rewards, and punishments.

Author Michael Newton PH.D has a background as a counseling psychologist, master hypnotherapist, teacher, and researcher. This book covers such topics as How it feels to die, What you see and feel right after death, When and where you learn to recognize soul mates on earth, Different levels of souls- beginning/intermediate/and advanced, What happens to “disturbed” souls, and The purpose of life and manifestation of a Creator.

If you’re able and willing to stretch your mind and imagination, enjoy this fresh look at the age old idea of ‘what happens after we die?’.

A Cancer Therapy

photo 1Even though I don’t have cancer, many of my friends have walked that road.  So I thought reading this book would be enlightening.

In the book A Cancer Therapy, Dr. Max Gerson gives a foundation to understand how cancer can best be framed so that it can be cured.  According to Dr. Gerson, studies show that cancer is a degenerative disease that takes a long time to develop.  So when we find a lump, that is the culmination of years of degeneration, so much that the liver has finally grown too weak to fight the cancer.  This book is a summary of thirty years of clinical experimentation by Dr. Max Gerson M.D. from the 1930’s-1950’s.  He successfully took advanced cancer patients that traditional medicine had written off, and figured out how to heal the majority of them.

Dr. Gerson said that there is no magic pill that cures cancer.  Yes, if you remove a large cancerous lump, sometimes that takes enough of the toxins out of the body where the liver can resume to clean the rest itself.  But many times there is still so much sickness left in the bone, blood, and organs that’s just not showing signs yet, that the cancer ‘returns’.  Dr. Gerson’s therapy was developed to treat not just the end symptoms (the tumors etc.) but the many causes  – such as toxins from our pesticides and poor soil nutrition, using food and rest medicinally, detoxifying gently and slowly so the body doesn’t go into shock, etc.

This book was first published back in 1958.  Today, as then, this research seems to be the last resort for those with advanced stage cancer who have been told they will die.  So they get this book, find out about the Gerson Institute where they can get updated information on how to treat their disease at home, or go to a clinic where it can be treated for them.  The regime is currently a little less intensive then what was written originally in the book, but it is still a slow, steady, time-consuming walk to healing.  While the typical person prefers a faster more heroic rescue to a slow personal climb, if you’re willing (or desperate) to see results, this book is a fascinating read.

I found some healthy concepts I’d like to use/modify for use in my own life.  The suggestions list of potassium rich veggies and fruits (many I already enjoy, some I want to buy and try out) look like a delicious and easy addition to my diet.  And the detox ideas are ones I may explore in the future as well.

Book: Choosing Easy World

photo 1You know all those books that tell you “just have a positive mental attitude?”  Well, this book is the manual on how to achieve that effortlessly.   Read this mix of practical examples, storytelling, science, and you can be in easy world as well.   If you believe there could be parallel universes or realities…why not parallel worlds of difficult and easy?  This book gives tools to actively (or at times quite passively) change your perspective to make joy your main operating source instead of fear/control/worry.

Julia Rogers Hamrick’s writing style makes this book a fast read.  I can see how many of the good things that have happened to me, the “wow, I can’t believe my luck!” experiences, took place when I was in what this book refers to as ‘Easy World’.  It’s the world of flow, of connection, of joy and fun and hard work that ends in satisfaction.  This Easy World perspective isn’t a striving place or a place of pushing, worry, stress, etc.    And it’s not a pill you take once and everything is peachy.  It’s a place to live.  Take a journey through Choosing Easy World by Julia Rogers Hamrick, and see if your perspective changes for the better.

book: Zero Waste Home

zero waste homeZero Waste Home by Bea Johnson, is a book  of  fun and practical ideas written by a frugal French mom living in America with her American husband and 2 boys. While several of her ideas I already have in practice (she details composting, de-cluttering, simplifying), I found many new ideas such as a simple multi-purpose balm, techniques for waterproofing leather, and special towel folding techniques to carry food to picnics and wrap gifts.   So far I’ve tried her cocoa powder eye shadow, where I brushed cocoa powder on my eyelids.  I then asked my 17 year old son what he thought.  He was like “Mom – it makes you look old and wrinkly!”  I put on my glasses and sure enough even though I liked the color, this is a tip for someone much younger…but it was fun and simple to try!

Bea gives a list of houseplants that clean the air, tips on travel, recipes, stories from her own family, decorating, cleaning, wardrobe, gift wrapping, simple home building/craft projects, holidays and more.   It was a fun read, a cross between homesteading and housekeeping, humor and practicality, simplicity and relaxation.  Instead of making me feel overwhelmed, she made me feel comfortable and curious to try new ideas.

How introverts can change the world for the better

The Introvert AdvantageMany books are written on how to put your extroverted self out there to be better, stronger, faster! so it’s great to find a book with a different take on how to help give voice to those on the more introverted side.  The Introvert Advantage by Marti Olsen Laney, Psy.D, is a book that focuses on pointing out the unique thinking patterns and skills that introverts bring to problem solving and life.  An introvert is someone who gets their recharge energy from being alone, whereas an extrovert is someone who gets their recharge energy from being out in the excitement with other people.  An example might be going to a dinner party:  an extrovert will be revved up after all the Continue reading

Book: classic style featuring women 60+

Advanced Style

Young photographer Ari Seth Cohen has captured the fashion sense and confidence of the classic older set in his book Advanced Style.  As a boy, his grandma’s fashion sense, watching classic movies, and taking trips to the library to see pictures of the past enamored Ari.  He was struck by the images of elegant and glamorous times where men and women wore hats, gloves, and dressed up because it was the thing to do.  Advanced Style shows Ari Seth Cohen’s photos of real women, most in the age range of 60-100, many giving advice on how they chose styles that work best for them.

These are great ideas no matter what your age, but are especially wonderful for Continue reading

Little free libraries!

Littlefreelibrary1On a walk through our neighborhood yesterday, I saw a cute wooden box, and inside it was a little free library of books!  If you like little things, and you like to read, you might like the idea of installing a little free library near your house for the neighbors to enjoy.

The mission of the Little Free Library:

  • To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations
  • To build more than 2,510 libraries around the world – more than Andrew Carnegie–and then more.

If you’d like to join in the fun, here’s how.

Book: The Paleo Solution (The Original Human Diet), by Robb Wolf

The Paleo SolutionA fun little romp through human history, this diet book explains what the human body needs to function optimally, and backs it up with archeology, science, chemistry, and more.  Robb Wolf is a research biochemist and athlete who wants to help people get and stay well (his own parents were sick a lot), so opened a gym focusing on how simple nutrition, exercise, and a few lifestyle changes can radically improve ones’ appearance, health, and longevity.

This is an entertaining book, but I was impressed most with the charts about what foods have the highest nutritional and fiber value (spoiler:  it’s not grains) Continue reading

Book: Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting

excuse me
In the book by Lynn Grabhorn Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting, Lynn talks of the astonishing power of feelings, and that the scientific rule “like attracts like” also takes place with our feelings. When our energy is happy and flowing, we attract happy things into our lives.  By getting excited and feeling joy, the happy vibration attracts other joy/opportunities – not only in your original inspiration, but in other areas of your life as well.

Problem is, “like attracts like” also works in the negative – where we tend to
live much of our adult lives – but we can change that.  Lynn Grabhorn spends the majority of the book explaining step by step how, and Continue reading

Book: You Can Buy Happiness (and It’s Cheap)

you can buy happinessA fun little romp by Tammy Strobel, You Can Buy Happiness (and It’s Cheap) is a story of how one woman radically simplified her life and how you can too.  Tammy began (like many of us) by working and commuting long hours, living on credit, shopping for clothes during lunch break, and coveting a big diamond wedding ring.  She and her husband had the car, the nice apartment, an over abundance of things…but she was also in debt, didn’t have time, and felt empty.

Part memoir, part economic research, part spiritual mentor, part humor, Continue reading

Don Poynter helps bring your book to print – and beyond

Dan Poynter

In the late 1980’s I was working as a DJ at a local radio station where callers would often ask how to get their music played on the radio, how to join a band, how to publicize their music, etc.  Most information I found at the time were biographies about big stars like Mick Jagger – not very helpful/practical for the beginning local musician.  I did find one book about getting started in Christian music, so read through it eagerly looking for clues to pass along to my callers/listeners.   The advice?  Call your local DJ.  I’m like I AM the local DJ, and I don’t have a clue.

So I did what I always do when there is no easy answer:  I research.  I called up venues, talked to radio music directors, talked to other local bands, talked to book and music stores, and compiled what I was hoped would be a short information pamphlet – which ended up being the size of a book.  So I researched how to publish a book, and came across an amazing book called Dan Poynter’s Self Publishing Manual.  It was a huge book, that carefully went over every Continue reading

Book: Second Sight by Judith Orloff, M.D.

Second SightThis book reads more like a novel than a self-help book.  Judith Orloff is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, has a private practice, is a New York Times bestselling author… and is an empathic intuitive.  Not a ‘put-on-a-turban-roll-your-eyes-into-your-head-entertainer’, but an authentic healer and seer.  She was part of the team awhile back that intuited and uncovered buried sea treasure.  I remember reading about that in the news and thinking “cool – to be able to find buried treasure with your thoughts!”

Second Sight starts out with Judith’s childhood fear of ‘knowing’ when her grandpa died, and why she could tell which of her parents friends were going to Continue reading

Book: The Happiness Project

Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon:  “The days are long, but the years are short,” she realized.  “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.”  So she decided to do something about it – to research and apply happiness to her life.

With humor and insight, she chronicled her adventures during the 12 months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier.  Since Rubin is a mom and loves her city, she didn’t uproot herself;  instead, she focused on improving her life as it was.

Her conclusions:  money CAN buy happiness when spent wisely, novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness, over ‘treating’ yourself can make you feel worse, and Continue reading

Book Review: The Hidden Messages In Water

If you’re looking for a short and fascinating read, check out The Hidden Messages in Water, by Masaru Emoto.

The Hidden Messages in Water introduces the revolutionary work of internationally renowned Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto, who has discovered that molecules of water are affected by our thoughts, words, and feelings.

The photos in the book are incredible.  Emoto took samples of waters from around the world, and in a lab the only thing different he did was to expose them to the vibrations of various music styles, or to the vibration of certain Continue reading
